Under the morning sun in Brgy. Lacag, Daraga, Albay, farmers carefully inspected bundles of young abaca plants delivered to their barangay. For many, these seedlings represent more than crops—they are a chance to improve fiber quality, increase harvests, and boost family income.
On February 16, 2026, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) Regional Office V successfully distributed 1,636 high-quality abaca planting materials to local farmers. The initiative was carried out in partnership with the Albay Provincial Agricultural Office, the municipal government, and AFAFA Inc., ensuring that seedlings reached even the most remote farming communities.
Albay is recognized as one of the country’s leading abaca-producing provinces. Known for its resilient and strong fibers, abaca is a vital crop that supports both household livelihoods and the regional economy. However, farmers often face challenges such as pests, outdated planting materials, and limited access to quality seedlings, which can affect fiber quality and yield.
The distribution event aimed to address these challenges by providing farmers with certified, disease-free abaca planting materials. According to PhilFIDA, using high-quality seedlings can significantly improve fiber strength and length, resulting in better market value and higher income for farmers.
Local officials and community leaders also participated in the activity, emphasizing the importance of supporting smallholder farmers in sustainable agriculture initiatives. By combining government support, private sector partnerships, and community engagement, the program ensures that abaca farming remains productive and profitable.
Farmers who received the seedlings expressed gratitude, noting that access to quality planting materials is crucial in maintaining their livelihoods. “These seedlings will help us produce better fiber and earn more for our families,” said one beneficiary.
PhilFIDA’s commitment to sustaining Albay’s position as a top abaca producer reflects a broader strategy to strengthen the country’s fiber industry. The agency continues to provide technical assistance, training, and resources to empower farmers and enhance the competitiveness of Philippine abaca in local and global markets.
As the seedlings take root, farmers in Brgy. Lacag look forward to a more productive planting season and a brighter future for their households and communities.
