Under the morning sun in Baras, Catanduanes, local officials and farmers gathered to discuss new opportunities for the community’s fiber industry. Abaca farmers, the backbone of the area’s livelihood, looked forward to programs that could help improve production and income.
On March 27, 2026, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) led by Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza, along with key officials from the Technical Assistance, Planning, and Regulatory Divisions, paid a courtesy visit to the Municipality of Baras. They were warmly welcomed by Municipal Vice Mayor Rico T. Tating.
The visit aimed to strengthen coordination between PhilFIDA and the local government, ensuring that national programs are aligned with local initiatives. Discussions focused on supporting abaca farmers through improved production techniques, better processing methods, and sustainable livelihood opportunities for the community.
PhilFIDA officials emphasized that collaboration with local stakeholders is essential to grow the country’s fiber industry. By sharing technical guidance and connecting farmers to markets, the agency hopes to enhance both productivity and income for abaca producers.
Abaca, known as Manila hemp, is a key agricultural product for Catanduanes, contributing not only to local livelihoods but also to the national economy through exports. Strengthening its production and processing can help ensure a steady supply of quality fiber while also creating jobs in rural areas.
The engagement also highlighted the importance of sustainability. PhilFIDA encourages practices that protect natural resources while increasing productivity, helping farmers maintain long-term growth without harming the environment.
Local officials expressed optimism that closer cooperation with PhilFIDA will bring tangible benefits to the community. Through training, technical assistance, and support programs, farmers are better equipped to improve their yields and participate in value-adding activities such as fiber processing and handicraft production.
This visit reflects PhilFIDA’s ongoing commitment to developing the Philippine fiber industry, ensuring that small-scale farmers and communities receive support, guidance, and opportunities for economic growth. By fostering partnerships with local governments, the agency aims to build a more resilient and competitive fiber sector across the country.
