In the upland town of Pasil, where farming sustains daily life and traditions are deeply rooted in the land, local leaders paused to honor a figure they say has helped strengthen agriculture and rural communities beyond their borders. The recognition reflects how national leadership can leave a lasting mark on local development.
The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) announced that its Executive Director, Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza, has been formally recognized as an honorary son of the Municipality of Pasil in Kalinga province. The honor was conferred through Municipal Resolution No. 2026-16, approved by the local government in acknowledgment of Atienza’s contributions to agriculture and community development.
The resolution cited Pasil’s rich cultural heritage, strong indigenous communities, and natural landmarks such as Mt. Sapocoy, Tumuyok Falls, Pacharao or Fangfangaw Lake, and the Kabunyan Spring and Bridge. It also highlighted the town’s mineral resources and the central role of agriculture as the primary source of livelihood for many families.
Local officials said the recognition reflects their appreciation for leaders who support rural growth and respect indigenous culture. Agriculture remains the backbone of Pasil’s economy, with farmers relying on traditional knowledge and natural resources to sustain their communities.
Atienza was commended for his leadership in advancing agriculture and promoting sustainable development. Municipal leaders noted that his work aligns with the national vision of empowering farmers, indigenous peoples, and local industries through inclusive and science-based programs.
The Sangguniang Bayan of Pasil, led by Mayor Arnel B. Banasan, praised Atienza for supporting initiatives that benefit communities in the Cordillera Administrative Region. Council members said his efforts have helped raise awareness of the importance of agriculture, fiber production, and rural livelihoods in upland areas.
PhilFIDA officials said Atienza’s recognition reflects the agency’s broader mission to strengthen the fiber industry while ensuring that farmers and weavers benefit directly from development programs. PhilFIDA works closely with local governments and communities to improve production, support value-adding activities, and promote sustainable use of natural fibers such as abaca, cotton, and other indigenous materials.
Under Atienza’s leadership, PhilFIDA has continued to push for programs that support small farmers and rural workers. These efforts aim to increase income opportunities, protect traditional skills, and contribute to national goals on food security and inclusive growth.
The agency noted that empowering rural and indigenous communities is essential to long-term agricultural development. In areas like Kalinga, where farming is closely tied to culture and identity, support from national agencies can help preserve traditions while opening new economic opportunities.
Local leaders said honoring Atienza as an honorary son symbolizes partnership between national institutions and local communities. They stressed that development is most effective when government programs respond to the realities on the ground and respect local values.
PhilFIDA congratulated Atienza for the recognition and reaffirmed its commitment to uplifting farmers and weavers across the country. The agency said it will continue working with local governments and communities to promote fiber industry development and support inclusive growth, especially in rural and indigenous areas.
As Pasil looks to the future, local officials expressed hope that continued cooperation with national agencies will help strengthen agriculture, protect natural resources, and improve the quality of life for residents.
