Farmers in northern Luzon and residents in low-lying areas were urged to prepare as a low pressure area (LPA) spotted near Batanes has a high chance of turning into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, according to the Department of Science and Technology – PAGASA.
As of Wednesday morning, October 22, the LPA was located 370 kilometers north-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes. This weather system could bring heavy rainfall and strong winds if it continues to strengthen into a storm.
At the same time, two other weather systems are affecting the country. The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is bringing rain to parts of Mindanao, while the easterlies—warm winds from the Pacific Ocean—are affecting the eastern sections of Luzon and Visayas.
Because of these systems, scattered to heavy rains are expected in several areas. PAGASA warned that these rains may cause flash floods and landslides, especially in mountainous and low-lying communities.
Local officials and disaster response units have been advised to stay on alert and monitor weather updates closely. Farmers in affected areas are encouraged to secure their crops and livestock as a precaution.
October to December marks the peak of the typhoon season in the Philippines. The country averages around 20 tropical cyclones each year, with about eight making landfall. Climate experts have also warned that storms are becoming stronger and more unpredictable due to the effects of climate change.
Communities are reminded to listen to advisories from PAGASA and local authorities and to take early action if evacuation is needed. Preparedness can save lives and reduce damage to property and livelihood.
