Before sunrise, shoppers at wet markets across Metro Manila are already choosing from trays of bangus, tilapia, and galunggong — common staples on the Filipino dinner table. For many, how much they pay for these fish affects what ends up on their family’s plates.
To keep the public informed and help ensure fair prices, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) conducted regular monitoring of fish prices in selected markets across Metro Manila on October 14 and 17, 2025.
According to BFAR’s Fisheries Industry Development and Support Services Division (FIDSSD), the prices of the most commonly sold fish—bangus (milkfish), tilapia, galunggong (both local and imported), and alumahan—remained generally stable during the period.
Prevailing Prices in Monitored Wet Markets:
-
Bangus (milkfish): Prices ranged from ₱160 to ₱220 per kilo, depending on the size and quality.
-
Tilapia: Sold at ₱120 to ₱160 per kilo in most markets.
-
Local galunggong: Priced between ₱200 to ₱260 per kilo.
-
Imported galunggong: Slightly lower, at around ₱140 to ₱180 per kilo.
-
Alumahan (mackerel): Remained between ₱240 and ₱300 per kilo.
BFAR said the price levels are within normal range for the “ber” months, which often see increased demand for fish products due to holiday preparations. While some prices slightly vary depending on the market location and supply volume, no major spikes were reported.
The agency regularly monitors prices to support both consumers and fisherfolk. Stable prices help ensure affordability for families while also supporting local fish producers who rely on fair market rates for their income.
BFAR also encourages the public to buy locally sourced fish to support the Philippine fishing industry. By choosing local catch, consumers help reduce dependence on imported fish and contribute to the livelihood of small-scale fishermen.
The agency said it will continue its weekly market checks and price surveillance as part of its commitment to promote food security and fair trade in the fisheries sector.
