where old buildings whisper stories of the past, government workers took a meaningful pause from their busy desks. Last week, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) – MEO-West led a special learning journey through the National Museum of the Philippines to reconnect employees with the nation’s culture, history, and natural wealth.
The “Lakbay Turo” activity was held in celebration of National Museum and Galleries Month this October. It aimed to deepen the awareness of DENR staff about the close ties between environmental work and the country’s heritage, reminding them that protecting nature also means protecting history and culture.
Organized by the Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement Office of MEO-West, the tour brought together representatives from various DENR NCR offices, including MEO-East, MEO-South, MEO-North, the Manila Bay Site Coordinating and Management Office, and the Legal Division.
Participants explored two key sites under the National Museum: the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Anthropology. These galleries house important exhibits showcasing the Philippines’ rich biodiversity, unique ecosystems, and deep cultural roots—from native species and ancient artifacts to indigenous traditions and Filipino craftsmanship.
According to organizers, activities like Lakbay Turo play a vital role in strengthening the environmental and cultural consciousness of DENR personnel. By seeing the connections between history, people, and nature, they gain a fuller understanding of why it is important to protect the environment—not just for today, but for future generations.
The visit also supports DENR’s ongoing campaigns on environmental education and sustainable development. It serves as a reminder that heritage and ecology are not separate issues but are deeply intertwined in shaping Filipino identity.
The museum tour was not only educational but also a reflective experience for many participants, some of whom said they were inspired to bring what they learned back to their local communities and offices.
As the Philippines continues to face climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation, initiatives like Lakbay Turo highlight the need for both government and citizens to value the past, understand the present, and protect the future.
