Amid the rolling hills and lush abaca fields of Catanduanes, farmers gathered to celebrate a milestone for their community. The Provincial Government formally recognized Department of Agriculture–Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (DA–PhilFIDA) Executive Director Ali Atienza as an Adopted Son of Catanduanes. The honor comes in recognition of his outstanding efforts to modernize the island’s abaca industry and improve the lives of local farmers.
The recognition, proposed through a resolution by PBM Edwin T. Tanael, Chairperson of the Committee on Agriculture, highlights ED Atienza’s dedication to promoting sustainable fiber production and supporting farmers under the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and DA Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr.
Under ED Atienza’s guidance, PhilFIDA has launched programs that rehabilitate abaca farms, introduce Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and encourage the safe use of modern tools like the Spindle Stripping Machine. These efforts, implemented in close coordination with PhilFIDA Region V, have helped increase productivity and strengthen the livelihoods of abaca farmers across the province.
Farmers and local officials praised ED Atienza’s leadership, noting that his initiatives have reinforced Catanduanes’ reputation as the Abaca Capital of the Philippines. By improving farm efficiency and promoting sustainable practices, PhilFIDA’s programs have not only boosted fiber production but also ensured long-term economic benefits for local communities.
The ceremony stood as a heartfelt acknowledgment of ED Atienza’s commitment to agricultural progress and the welfare of Filipino farmers. For many in Catanduanes, the honor reflects gratitude for a leader who has championed both innovation and sustainability in the abaca industry.
As the island continues to supply high-quality abaca to the nation and the world, the collaboration between government agencies and local farmers remains a vital force in securing a prosperous future for the province’s agricultural sector.
