A small dog’s wagging tail may bring joy to many households, but it also reminds Filipinos of a silent threat—rabies. On February 18, 2026, the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) partnered with the Philippine Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) to launch the nationwide campaign “A Rabies-Free Future Starts with Me” during the 93rd PVMA Convention in Iloilo City.

The initiative aims to protect both humans and animals by promoting responsible pet ownership and improving vaccination coverage across the country. Key activities include a synchronized Rabies Vaccination Drive on March 11, 2026, and a National Spay and Neuter Day on March 19, 2026. These efforts are coordinated with local government units and members of the Provincial, Municipal, and City Veterinarians League of the Philippines (PCMVLP) to reach as many communities as possible.

Rabies remains a fatal but preventable disease. The campaign is part of the global Zero by 30 initiative of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), which targets the elimination of human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030. Sustained vaccination, community awareness, and proactive animal management are crucial to achieving this goal.

BAI emphasized that partnerships with veterinary professionals, local authorities, and community members are essential for a rabies-free Philippines. By working together, the campaign seeks to safeguard public health while promoting the welfare of pets and other animals.

The initiative also encourages every Filipino to take part—vaccinating pets, practicing responsible ownership, and supporting local animal health programs—so that communities remain safe from this preventable disease.
