In the lush fields of Catanduanes, where abaca plants sway under the tropical sun, farmers work tirelessly to protect their crops from damaging diseases. Their hard work was recently honored in a special event recognizing their role in preserving the province’s vital abaca industry.

On October 17, 2025, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) Regional Office V held an awarding ceremony in Mabini, Viga, Catanduanes. The event celebrated the collective efforts of abaca farmer groups and local partners who have actively supported the Abaca Disease Management Project (ADMP). These initiatives help control diseases and rehabilitate abaca plantations to ensure healthier and more productive crops.

Local officials joined the ceremony, including Governor Patrick Alain T. Azanza, Mayor Jennifer M. Tuplano of Viga, and TGP Partylist Representative Jose “Bong” Teves, Jr.. Also present were Provincial Board Member Edwin T. Tanael, who chairs the Committee on Agriculture, PhilFIDA Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza, and OIC-Regional Director Mary Anne R. Molina. All expressed their full support for the abaca farmers and the continued growth of the abaca industry in Catanduanes.

The awarding of labor incentives highlights PhilFIDA’s dedication to strengthening abaca farming communities. By backing disease control efforts, the agency aims to protect farmers’ livelihoods and help the province maintain its reputation as a key abaca producer in the country.

This project aligns with the national government’s focus on agricultural development, as guided by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Agriculture Secretary Francisco “Kiko” Tiu Laurel, Jr. Their leadership underscores the importance of sustainable farming practices to boost income and improve the quality of Philippine fibers for global markets.

Abaca, known locally as the “Manila hemp,” remains an important crop for many Filipino farmers, especially in the Bicol region. Controlling plant diseases is crucial for keeping production steady and preventing losses that affect entire communities.

As Catanduanes continues to battle abaca diseases, the recognition and support from PhilFIDA and government leaders serve as encouragement to farmers to keep pushing forward. Their dedication not only preserves a traditional industry but also builds a stronger future for their families and the local economy.
