This scene captures the spirit of World Fisheries Day, celebrated worldwide to recognize the vital role of fishers and the urgent need to protect marine resources.
The Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) joined the global observance, highlighting the importance of securing a stable supply of aquatic resources and defending the rights of small-scale fishers. Officials said that millions of Filipinos rely on fisheries not only for income but also for affordable protein, making the sector essential to national food security.
As the country’s lead agency for managing marine and freshwater resources, BFAR renewed its commitment to fair and sustainable fisheries management. This includes strengthening programs that support local fishers, such as capacity building, modernizing community hatcheries, expanding patrol operations against illegal fishing, and improving access to post-harvest facilities.
The Philippines, one of the world’s top fish-producing nations, faces ongoing challenges such as overfishing, climate change, and pollution. These threats have reduced fish stocks in several areas, making life harder for coastal communities. BFAR noted that long-term solutions must combine science-based policies, responsible fishing practices, and active participation from both government and local communities.
Officials also emphasized the importance of protecting small-scale fishers, who make up the majority of the sector. Many of them still struggle with limited equipment, rising fuel costs, and unpredictable weather patterns. Ensuring their safety and livelihood means creating programs that address their needs while preserving marine ecosystems for future generations.
World Fisheries Day serves as a reminder that healthy oceans and rivers are key to a strong economy and a food-secure nation. By promoting sustainable fishing and supporting coastal communities, the country can work toward a future where every Filipino family has access to safe and abundant seafood.
