In many crowded neighborhoods, even a small pot of herbs or vegetables can make a home feel greener and help families save on food costs. This simple idea is at the heart of an upcoming seminar that hopes to inspire more Filipinos to grow their own food, even in limited spaces.
The Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) announced that it will hold a free face-to-face seminar on Urban Gardening and Plant Propagation on November 26, 2025. The event will take place at the Crop Research and Production Support Division (CRPSD) Training Room in San Andres, Malate, Manila, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The seminar is open to the public and aims to teach practical techniques that households can apply at home. Topics will include soil preparation, seedling care, container gardening, and simple propagation methods for vegetables and ornamental plants. Trainers from DA-BPI will also share tips on maintaining small gardens in tight urban spaces, an approach that has grown in popularity as food prices continue to rise.
Urban gardening has become an important movement in many cities. It helps improve access to fresh produce, reduces household expenses, and encourages healthier eating. Studies from past government programs show that even small backyard gardens can supplement a family’s daily food needs when maintained regularly.
DA-BPI hopes the seminar will empower more residents to build their own edible gardens and contribute to community-based food production. The agency said that promoting home gardening is part of its broader goal to strengthen food security and support families in adapting to changing economic and environmental conditions.
Interested participants may register through the official online form provided by DA-BPI. Slots are limited, and early registration is encouraged to secure a seat.
The agency invites students, parents, senior citizens, and anyone interested in plants or sustainable living to attend the event. By learning simple gardening skills, they can start building healthier and greener homes, one plant at a time.
