KORONADAL CITY – In the rice fields of Sultan Kudarat, farmers are gearing up to face storms, droughts, and other climate threats with new tools and strategies aimed at protecting harvests and boosting yields.

Provincial Governor Datu Pax Ali S. Mangudadatu said the province is adopting climate-smart practices to reduce damage from natural disasters. “With proper planning and technology, we can protect our farmers and ensure more stable rice production,” he said.

Under a newly issued Executive Order, the province will implement smart maps and recommended adaptation plans prepared by the Climate-smart Maps team. These tools will guide the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) and the Rapid/Post Assessment and Needs Analysis (R/PDANA) Team in responding to extreme weather events.

The initiative follows a series of data collection and validation activities, as well as policy consultations to ensure strategies are tailored to local needs. Through this approach, farmers can anticipate risks, manage water use, and adopt resilient farming techniques.

Multiple provincial agencies are joining forces to strengthen the rice sector, including the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and Provincial Planning and Development Office. Their coordinated efforts aim to create a sustainable and disaster-ready agricultural system across the province.

Officials hope that by combining technology, planning, and community engagement, Sultan Kudarat can secure its rice production, protect livelihoods, and serve as a model for climate-smart farming in the region.
