Under the hot Cebu sun, farmers lined up with quiet hope, clutching documents that represented months of hard work lost to pests, disease, and sudden setbacks. For many, the wait ended with relief as government aid finally reached their hands.
The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) Regional Office 7 distributed ₱5.3 million worth of indemnity payments to farmers in Cebu province, offering much-needed support to those whose livelihoods were damaged by unforeseen losses. The payout benefited more than 850 farmers from the towns of Catmon, Sogod, Asturias, and Tuburan.
Most of the recipients were growers of high-value crops and corn whose farms were hit by pests and plant diseases. Others were livestock raisers who lost animals due to illness. These losses affected not only their income but also their ability to prepare for the next planting season.
The indemnity checks were released through the combined efforts of PCIC’s Administrative and Finance Division and its Insurance Underwriters. The activity was carried out in close coordination with the Municipal Agriculture Offices, which helped verify claims and organize the distribution.
PCIC Regional Office 7 Manager Paulita Secuya expressed her appreciation to local agriculture workers who assisted in the process. She said their support ensured that the aid reached the right beneficiaries quickly and smoothly.
“These indemnity payouts reflect PCIC’s continuing commitment to safeguard the livelihoods of our Filipino farmers,” Secuya said. She added that crop insurance plays a vital role in protecting farmers from risks beyond their control, such as pest infestations, animal diseases, and extreme weather events.
Agriculture officials noted that Cebu farmers face growing challenges each year. Rising production costs, changing weather patterns, and recurring pest outbreaks make farming more uncertain. For small farmers, a single crop failure can mean debt and food insecurity for their families.
PCIC insurance helps reduce that risk. By enrolling their crops and livestock, farmers gain access to financial protection when losses occur. Indemnity payments allow them to recover part of their investment and continue farming instead of giving up entirely.
Several farmer-beneficiaries shared their gratitude, saying the assistance would help them restart. Some plan to buy new seeds and farm inputs, while others will replace lost livestock. Many said the payout restored their confidence to plant again despite recent hardships.
Municipal agriculturists also welcomed the release of funds, stressing that insurance awareness should continue to grow at the local level. They encouraged more farmers to insure their crops and animals to avoid total loss during disasters or disease outbreaks.
The Cebu payout is part of PCIC’s broader effort to strengthen food production by protecting farmers nationwide. As agriculture remains a key source of income for millions of Filipinos, timely support like this helps keep farms running and food supplies stable.
As farmers return to their fields with renewed determination, the message is clear: recovery is possible with the right support. Programs that protect those who feed the nation remain essential, especially as risks to agriculture continue to rise.
