Employees at the National Tobacco Administration (NTA) paused after their regular Monday flag-raising ceremony as they gathered for a practical and timely lesson—how to stay safe when disasters strike. The short but meaningful orientation was held on November 17 at the NTA Central Office and was led by the agency’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (NDRRM) focal person, John James Canosa.

Many staff members stood attentively as Canosa explained the basics of disaster preparedness, a topic that has become increasingly important as the Philippines continues to face frequent earthquakes, heavy rains, and flooding. He said understanding the nature of hazards is the first step in reducing risks, whether at home, at work, or in the community.

During the session, employees learned how disasters differ from hazards, and how proper planning can prevent injuries and save lives. Canosa outlined simple safety measures such as identifying evacuation areas, preparing emergency kits, and knowing what to do during ground shaking or sudden floods. He emphasized that readiness is not only for major calamities but also for everyday emergencies that can happen without warning.

Participants were also reminded that the country lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire and is hit by several typhoons every year. Because of this, safety drills and regular training help ensure that government offices like the NTA can continue to operate and serve the public even during difficult situations. Canosa noted that preparedness strengthens not just the agency but also the communities that depend on its services.

The orientation is part of the NTA’s broader push to improve workplace safety and resilience. Officials said more activities will follow, including refresher trainings and practical demonstrations designed to guide employees through real-life scenarios.

As the short program ended, staff members expressed appreciation for the reminder and the new knowledge. Organizers hope the session encourages workers to share what they learned with their families and neighbors, building a culture of preparedness inside and outside the agency.
