Bright discussions filled the National Tobacco Administration (NTA) Central Office on March 25 as employees gathered to mark National Women’s Month. The focus: promoting gender-fair language in the workplace to ensure equality and respect for all.
The event was led by NTA Administrator and CEO Belinda S. Sanchez, joined by Deputy Administrators Nestor C. Casela and Benedicto M. Savalleno, department managers, and officers-in-charge from various divisions. The forum featured Director III Roderick J. Romualdo of the Civil Service Commission (CSC), Office of the President, as the subject matter expert.
Gender-fair language (GFL) emphasizes using words and expressions that are inclusive, non-discriminatory, and free from gender stereotypes. It aligns with CSC Memorandum Circular No. 12, Series of 2005, which requires government agencies to avoid sexist or discriminatory language in official communications, letters, and memoranda.
The goal of GFL is to promote equality in the workplace by using neutral terms. For instance, “chairperson” is preferred over “chairman,” and unnecessary gendered pronouns or titles are discouraged. Such practices help create a culture of respect, fairness, and inclusivity, particularly in job descriptions, internal communications, and professional correspondence.
During the forum, employees learned practical ways to apply gender-fair language in their daily work, from reports to official announcements. Officials emphasized that conscious language choices, though subtle, significantly impact workplace culture and can foster an environment where everyone feels valued regardless of gender.
NTA highlighted that initiatives like this forum are essential in advancing gender sensitivity across the agency. By promoting awareness and proper communication, the organization seeks to empower employees and encourage equal participation in all aspects of professional life.
As the agency continues its Women’s Month activities, the forum served as a reminder that small changes in language can contribute to larger shifts toward workplace equality. Participants left with practical insights on how to incorporate GFL in everyday communication, helping build a more inclusive and respectful work environment for all.
