In many public markets across the country, shoppers are already lining up before sunrise, hoping to buy the freshest cuts of meat for their holiday dishes. With families preparing for Noche Buena and year-end gatherings, the demand for pork, beef, and poultry is rising fast—and so is the need to keep every product safe and clean.

The National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS), together with local government units (LGUs), has strengthened inspections in markets and slaughterhouses this holiday season. Officials said the move aims to ensure that all meat sold to consumers meets national safety standards, especially during a time when foodborne illnesses tend to increase due to higher consumption and food handling.

Teams from NMIS and LGUs have been conducting regular checks in wet markets, supermarkets, and accredited slaughterhouses. These inspections focus on hygiene practices, proper storage, and the presence of valid permits. Inspectors also verify whether vendors are displaying the proper certificates that guarantee their products passed official meat inspection procedures.

Authorities explained that the Meat Inspection Certificate or Certificate of Meat Inspection remains the most important proof that meat is safe for public consumption. These documents show that the product has undergone the required ante-mortem and post-mortem inspection by authorized veterinarians and meat inspectors.

Consumers are encouraged to look for these certificates and to buy only from licensed stalls and trusted meat dealers. They are also reminded to choose meat that is fresh in color, firm in texture, and free from unusual odors. Safe handling at home—such as storing meat at proper temperatures and avoiding cross-contamination—also helps reduce health risks.

NMIS added that strengthened market surveillance is part of its year-round effort to protect consumers and support the local meat industry. Ensuring the integrity of meat products not only promotes public health but also helps farmers and processors maintain fair competition and high standards.

As holiday preparations continue, officials urge the public to remain alert and cautious when buying meat. They emphasized that safety begins with informed choices at the market, followed by proper food handling at home.
