Before sunrise, families line up quietly at designated rice outlets, clutching their IDs and hoping to stretch their limited budgets a little further. For many households in Northern Luzon, the chance to buy affordable but good-quality rice brings real relief amid rising food prices.
The National Food Authority has assured the public that its P20-per-kilo rice program, known as “Benteng Bigas Meron Na,” will offer safe, clean, and quality rice to those who need it most. The NFA Nueva Vizcaya Branch has stepped up preparations ahead of the program’s rollout across Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Ifugao, and Mountain Province.
Led by Branch Manager Elsa A. Lim, NFA teams conducted a series of site inspections and quality checks at rice selling and distribution areas in the four provinces. These inspections focused on ensuring that the rice meets quality standards, the selling areas are orderly and safe, and operations can run smoothly once distribution begins.
Officials also assessed the accessibility of the redemption sites. The goal is to make sure that buyers, especially senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and low-income families, can easily reach the locations without added hardship or expense.
Under the P20 rice program, qualified beneficiaries can buy rice at a much lower price than prevailing market rates. The initiative is designed to support vulnerable sectors, including rice farmers, fisherfolk, senior citizens, jeepney drivers, tricycle drivers and operators, persons with disabilities, solo parents, and indigent households such as those enrolled in the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program.
According to the NFA, sufficient rice stocks have already been secured to support the program’s implementation in the region. The agency stressed that strict rules will be enforced to ensure that only eligible beneficiaries can purchase the subsidized rice. Crowd control and proper queuing systems will also be put in place to maintain order and fairness at distribution sites.
The NFA Nueva Vizcaya Branch said coordination with local government units and partner agencies remains ongoing. This collaboration is meant to guarantee that the program is implemented efficiently and transparently, while preventing abuse and ensuring that assistance reaches the intended sectors.
Affordable rice remains a critical issue for many Filipino families. Rice accounts for a large share of household food spending, particularly among low- and middle-income earners. Any increase in rice prices often forces families to cut back on other basic needs such as school expenses, transportation, or healthcare.
By offering rice at P20 per kilo, the government hopes to ease the daily burden faced by vulnerable groups while also reinforcing food security efforts. The NFA emphasized that quality will not be compromised, noting that all rice released under the program undergoes inspection and quality control before distribution.
The agency also reiterated its broader mandate to stabilize rice supply and prices, especially during times of economic pressure and uncertainty. Officials said programs like Benteng Bigas Meron Na reflect the government’s commitment to protect consumers while supporting farmers through proper rice management.
As the program moves forward, the NFA encouraged beneficiaries to follow guidelines and cooperate with authorities at redemption sites. The agency said public cooperation is key to ensuring that the assistance reaches as many deserving families as possible.
With careful preparation and coordination, the NFA aims to deliver affordable, quality rice to communities that rely on it most, helping ensure that no Filipino family is left behind when it comes to food on the table.
