In a time when stress and anxiety are silently affecting many Filipino workers, the National Food Authority (NFA) took a step forward to care for its people’s well-being. On October 14, 2025, NFA employees gathered at the Multipurpose Hall in Quezon City for a seminar on mental health awareness in the workplace.
The seminar, led by Mr. Marc Neil G. Francisco, Program Coordinator of the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH), focused on helping employees understand mental health issues, reduce stigma, and learn simple ways to manage stress and take care of their mental wellness.
Building a more caring and supportive workplace
Organized by the NFA’s Administrative and General Services Department – Human Resource Development and Services Division (AGSD-HRDSD), the session is part of the agency’s broader Mental Health Program, which aims to build an inclusive and supportive environment for all its employees.
Mr. Francisco discussed common mental health challenges in the workplace, such as burnout, anxiety, and depression—issues often overlooked but affecting productivity, teamwork, and personal lives.
Participants were also taught easy self-care practices, such as mindful breathing, proper time management, and seeking help when needed. The session encouraged open conversations, showing that it’s okay not to be okay and that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
The importance of mental health in public service
The NFA, being at the frontline of food security, recognizes that caring for employees’ mental health is just as important as ensuring the quality of rice in every household.
Stress among government workers can come from tight deadlines, high expectations, and public service demands. By conducting seminars like this, the NFA shows that it values not just the work its employees do—but also their health, feelings, and lives outside the office.
As part of its commitment to responsible governance, the agency continues to find ways to support staff development and well-being.
Moving toward a more compassionate public sector
Mental health continues to be a growing concern in the Philippines, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Department of Health, about 3.6 million Filipinos are experiencing mental or neurological disorders. Despite this, stigma remains high, and many still hesitate to seek help.
The NFA’s initiative sends a strong message: creating a safe, inclusive, and mentally healthy workplace is not just good for employees—it’s essential for better service to the public.
As one of the participants shared, “Nakakagaan sa loob na marinig na normal lang ang mapagod at malungkot, basta alam mo kung paano ka babangon at may kasama kang handang umalalay.”
With continued support and awareness, more agencies and organizations are expected to follow suit, creating a kinder and more understanding work culture for all Filipinos.
