In a time when rising costs and labor shortages weigh heavily on farmers, the National Dairy Authority (NDA) is looking to technology as a solution. A recent meeting between NDA Administrator Atty. Marcus Antonius T. Andaya and Mr. Noe A. Dela Cerna of P.T. Corporation explored the possibility of automating dairy farm operations across the country.

Held at the NDA Central Office, the discussion centered on how modern technology can help increase productivity and efficiency in local dairy farms, many of which still rely on manual labor and outdated systems.

Technology as a solution to farm challenges

Dairy farming in the Philippines faces several problems: limited access to modern tools, low milk production per cow, and high maintenance costs. Many smallholder farmers still manually handle tasks like milking, feeding, and record-keeping—processes that are time-consuming and prone to error.

Automation, which includes the use of machines and digital systems, could change that.

By introducing technologies such as automatic milking machines, feeding systems, and farm management software, the NDA hopes to:

  • Improve milk yield and quality

  • Reduce manual labor and human error

  • Monitor cow health in real-time

  • Lower overall operational costs

  • Support long-term growth of the dairy industry

Mr. Dela Cerna of P.T. Corporation shared insights on existing technologies that could be adapted to local conditions, especially for small and medium-scale dairy farms.

Why this matters for local dairy farmers

The Philippines currently imports more than 99% of its dairy supply. Locally produced milk covers only a small part of the national demand, according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority. Boosting local milk production is crucial not only for food security, but also for the livelihood of Filipino dairy farmers.

Modernizing farm operations can give local producers a better chance at competing with imported dairy products. It can also improve working conditions and attract younger generations to consider farming as a viable and sustainable career.

The NDA sees this partnership as a step toward making local dairy farms more productive and profitable through innovation and public-private collaboration.

Moving toward a more modern dairy sector

This initiative is aligned with the government’s push for a Masaganang Bagong Pilipinas, where agriculture is not only productive, but also sustainable and inclusive. The NDA continues to seek ways to improve support for dairy farmers, from access to technology to better market connections.

If the talks move forward, pilot programs may be launched to test automation in selected dairy farms before a wider rollout.

As the global agriculture sector rapidly adopts digital solutions, the Philippines must keep pace. And for many dairy farmers, this could be the beginning of a more efficient, resilient, and rewarding future in farming.
