Farmers gathered in municipal halls across Zamboanga Sibugay, listening closely as new opportunities were laid out before them. For many, the meeting offered fresh hope that dairy farming could become a steady source of income for their families.

The National Dairy Authority – Northern Mindanao Department recently conducted a Dairy Program and Loan Scheme Orientation in the towns of Sominot, Mahayag, and Olutanga. The activity is part of the agency’s continuing efforts to strengthen the local dairy industry and open additional livelihood opportunities for farmers in the province.

The orientation was attended by farmers and technical personnel from their respective local government units. In Sominot, the activity was joined by the Municipal Mayor and Vice Mayor, showing strong local support for dairy development. In Mahayag, the Municipal Mayor also took part and expressed support for the program. In Olutanga, the Municipal Agriculture Office led the participation, headed by the Municipal Agriculturist.

NDA officials explained the agency’s key programs, including dairy farming opportunities, animal dispersal, milk production support, and access to loans and other forms of government assistance. The discussion focused on how farmers can start or expand dairy operations with proper guidance, training, and financial support.

The loan scheme was one of the main topics of interest. NDA representatives outlined how qualified farmers can apply for loans to help cover the cost of dairy animals, housing, feeds, and basic equipment. They emphasized that the program is designed to be farmer-friendly and supportive, especially for smallholders who want to diversify their income.

Dairy farming is seen as a promising livelihood because it provides regular income through daily milk production. Unlike seasonal crops, dairy farming allows farmers to earn throughout the year, helping them manage household expenses more steadily.

The orientation also highlighted the importance of proper animal care, feeding, and farm management. NDA stressed that successful dairy farming depends not only on access to animals and loans but also on the right knowledge and commitment. Farmers were encouraged to work closely with local agriculture offices and NDA technicians for continued guidance.

Strengthening coordination between the NDA and local government units was another key goal of the activity. By working together, both sides aim to build a sustainable and long-term dairy industry in Zamboanga Sibugay. Local officials play a vital role in identifying potential beneficiaries, monitoring projects, and supporting farmers on the ground.

Officials said Zamboanga Sibugay has good potential for dairy development due to available land, interested farmers, and strong LGU participation. With proper planning and support, dairy farming can help improve rural incomes and contribute to local food supply.

Participants welcomed the orientation, saying it gave them clearer information about the programs and the steps needed to join. Some farmers said they are now more confident in exploring dairy farming as an additional source of livelihood.

As the activity concluded, NDA officials reaffirmed their commitment to continue working with LGUs and farmers. They said similar orientations and follow-up activities will be conducted to ensure that interested farmers receive continuous support.

The initiative reflects the government’s broader goal of building a more resilient agricultural sector and creating sustainable livelihoods in rural areas. By bringing programs closer to communities, agencies hope to turn interest into action and plans into lasting income for farming families.
