Batac City, Ilocos Norte — The air buzzed with anticipation as tobacco farmers and agricultural experts gathered at the PhilRice Auditorium on October 16, 2025. This was the second day of the Project Technical Review and Tobacco Production Technology Updating for 2024–2025, an important event aimed at improving tobacco farming practices across the region.

The National Tobacco Administration (NTA) led the gathering, focusing on sharing the latest technologies and reviewing ongoing projects designed to help farmers increase tobacco yield and quality. The event also provided a platform for farmers to raise concerns and ask questions directly to experts and officials.

Tobacco remains a key crop in parts of the Philippines, including Ilocos Norte, where many smallholder farmers depend on it for their livelihood. With rising challenges such as climate change, pests, and fluctuating market prices, these technical reviews are vital to keep farmers informed and ready to adapt.

Officials emphasized the government’s commitment to support tobacco farmers through sustainable practices. They shared new methods for pest control, soil management, and seed selection, all aimed at promoting healthier crops and higher productivity.

The NTA also discussed strategies to balance tobacco production with environmental care, encouraging farmers to use less harmful chemicals and adopt eco-friendly techniques.

This yearly gathering is part of a wider government effort to build a stronger agricultural sector under the “Masaganang Bagong Pilipinas” program, which aims to improve farmers’ incomes and ensure food security.

As the event concluded, farmers left with renewed hope and practical knowledge to face the challenges of the coming planting season.
