Under a cloudy sky in Barangay Mabini, Mandaluyong, residents gathered eagerly for a special workshop about protecting their environment. The event brought together barangay officials, senior citizens, estero rangers, street sweepers, and other community members. It was a step toward a cleaner, greener neighborhood.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Metropolitan Environmental Office – West led the “Dalaw Turo,” a learning session aimed at teaching people about important environmental laws and encouraging active community involvement in protecting nature.
In her opening remarks, MEO-West Officer-in-Charge Rodelina M. De Villa thanked the barangay for their cooperation. She said, “Environmental laws work best when people understand and apply them in their own communities. Through Dalaw Turo, we deliver correct information directly to the people.”
One key topic was the proper handling of chemical waste and the importance of good sewer systems. River Protection Officer I Mhig Denielle Alberto explained the dangers of dumping harmful chemicals into waterways and the legal consequences under the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004 (Republic Act No. 9275).
Another speaker, River Protection Officer II Marquem Ocfemia, emphasized the importance of waste segregation and setting up Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in every community. This supports compliance with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (Republic Act No. 9003), which aims to reduce trash and promote recycling.
The session also included a push for urban gardening. Ms. Lea Macabontoc encouraged participants to grow fruits and vegetables at home. She highlighted how this practice helps improve health and nutrition by providing fresh food. To start this, she gave away over 300 fruit-bearing trees and ornamental plants to the community.
The Dalaw Turo workshop is part of DENR MEO-West’s ongoing efforts to build environmental awareness at the grassroots level. These programs are important steps toward safer, cleaner, and greener urban neighborhoods.
As urban areas continue to grow, such initiatives remind everyone that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility that begins at home and in the community.
