Under the warm sun and the gentle waves of Siquijor, 27 Department of Agriculture (DA) technical staff spent a week learning new ways to help farmers improve their livelihoods.
From October 26 to 31, staff from DA Regional Field Offices (RFOs), the DA-Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD), and ATI Regional Training Centers (RTCs) gathered for the Basic Agricultural Extension Course (BAEC). The program focused on practical skills for agricultural extension—how to communicate effectively with farmers, implement innovative farming strategies, and engage communities through hands-on immersion sessions.
The course combined lectures, case studies, and field activities to give participants a clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities in agricultural extension work. By exploring real-life examples and practicing direct community engagement, the staff were equipped to deliver better support to farmers in their regions.
As part of their “re-entry plans,” graduates of the course will return to their respective DA-RFOs and ATI-RTCs to serve as resource persons. They will lead training sessions, guide extension activities, and share knowledge to ensure farmers benefit from the latest techniques and best practices.
The BAEC reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening agriculture through education, practical training, and collaboration. By empowering technical staff with updated skills and knowledge, the DA aims to enhance productivity, promote innovation, and support Filipino farmers in building sustainable livelihoods.
Participants expressed enthusiasm about applying what they learned, highlighting the value of hands-on experience and community-focused strategies. The program also encouraged networking among staff from different regions, fostering partnerships that can further advance agricultural development across the country.
Programs like BAEC are vital in bridging the gap between policy, research, and the realities faced by farmers. They ensure that agricultural support is not only technical but also empathetic, practical, and responsive to local needs.
