In farming communities across the country, the carabao has long been a symbol of hard work and survival. For many families, it is more than a farm animal. It is a partner in earning a living. For the past ten years, these stories of grit, growth, and hope have been told through Karbaw, the official magazine of the Department of Agriculture–Philippine Carabao Center (DA-PCC).
This year, Karbaw marks a decade since the release of its first issue, celebrating ten years of documenting the rise of carapreneurship in the Philippines. Joining the popular “2016 in magazine covers” social media trend, the magazine looked back on its journey and the many lives it has helped spotlight along the way.
Launched in 2016, Karbaw was created to tell stories that matter in the carabao industry. Managed and produced by the DA-PCC Knowledge Management Division, the magazine takes its name from the Hiligaynon word for carabao or buffalo. From the start, its mission has been clear: to share real stories of farmers, dairy producers, and value chain workers who have been empowered through the Carabao Development Program.
Over the years, Karbaw has featured carapreneurs from different parts of the country. These are individuals and families who turned carabao-based farming into sustainable enterprises. Their stories show how access to training, technology, and government support helped improve income, nutrition, and quality of life in rural communities.
The magazine has also chronicled advances in dairy carabao farming, including better breeding practices, improved animal health, and new technologies developed through research. It explains complex science in simple terms, helping farmers and readers understand how innovation can raise productivity and protect livelihoods.
Beyond farming techniques, Karbaw highlights the wider impact of the carabao industry. Stories often focus on women and youth who found opportunities in milk processing, cooperative work, and small-scale agribusiness. These features show how carabao-based enterprises help create jobs and strengthen local economies.
Karbaw’s commitment to quality storytelling was recognized in 2022, when it was named Best Agri-related Government Publication at the Binhi Awards of the Philippine Agricultural Journalists. The award affirmed the magazine’s role in promoting agriculture through credible, engaging, and people-centered reporting.
A decade on, the team behind Karbaw remains driven by the same passion. Editors, writers, layout artists, and photographers continue to work together to bring stories from the field to the page. They aim not only to inform but also to inspire, giving voice to farmers whose efforts often go unseen.
As the carabao industry continues to grow, Karbaw evolves with it. The magazine adapts to new platforms and trends while staying true to its purpose of telling authentic stories of resilience and transformation.
Ten years since its first issue, Karbaw stands as a record of how carapreneurship has changed lives. More importantly, it serves as a reminder that behind every success in agriculture are people, communities, and stories worth telling.
