Bright banners and proud smiles filled the hall in Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, as the Department of Agriculture–National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (DA-NFRDI) was honored for its dedication to scientific excellence in fisheries. On November 14, 2025, the institute received both the Institutional Award and the Mentorship Award during the 19th Annual Meeting and Scientific Forum (AMSF) of the Scientific Career System (SCS) and the Philippine Association of Career Scientists, Inc. (PACS).
The Institutional Award recognizes organizations that actively support scientific research, encourage innovation, and foster career growth for scientists. The Mentorship Award, meanwhile, highlights individuals who guide and inspire fellow researchers, helping to strengthen the country’s scientific community.
Dr. Mudjekeewis Santos, Career Scientist V and chief of the Training Division at DA-NFRDI, accepted both honors on behalf of the institute. Dr. Santos was also personally recognized with the Mentorship Award for his outstanding guidance and leadership in developing the skills of younger scientists in the fisheries sector.
“Receiving these awards is a testament to our team’s commitment to advancing fisheries science in the Philippines,” Dr. Santos said. “We aim not only to produce high-quality research but also to nurture the next generation of scientists who will continue this important work.”
DA-NFRDI plays a key role in the country’s fisheries sector, conducting research on sustainable aquaculture, resource management, and marine biodiversity. Its work supports government programs to improve food security, enhance livelihoods for coastal communities, and protect aquatic resources from overfishing and environmental threats.
The recognition from SCS and PACS underscores the institute’s ongoing contribution to scientific progress and mentorship, highlighting the importance of building both knowledge and leadership within the scientific community. By fostering innovation and professional growth, DA-NFRDI strengthens the foundation for a more resilient and productive fisheries sector in the Philippines.
As the institute celebrates these achievements, it continues to inspire researchers and fishery practitioners nationwide to pursue excellence, collaboration, and sustainable practices in the field of aquatic science.
