Inside a brightly lit conference room at the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI), officials gathered on October 6, 2025, to take a major step toward improving their work environment and service quality.

The Department of Agriculture’s NFRDI conducted its first Management Review (MR) to reaffirm its commitment to a strong and effective Quality Management System (QMS). This review aligns with the institute’s goal to support better fisheries research and development in the country.

During the meeting at the NFRDI Conference Room, key leaders agreed on important changes to guide the institute forward. They adopted a revised Quality Policy that now emphasizes inclusivity and responsiveness—making sure the institute serves the needs of all stakeholders while adapting quickly to challenges.

A highlight of the review was the launch of the Quality Workplace Program, designed to promote discipline and orderliness. This program will include weekly cleanup drives and regular 5S audits—a system that focuses on workplace organization and cleanliness. These efforts aim to create a safer, more efficient environment where staff can work effectively and with pride.

The 5S methodology stands for Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain. It has been widely used in various organizations to improve productivity and reduce waste by keeping workplaces clean and well-organized.

The Management Review also covered updates on the institute’s performance, challenges faced, and plans to meet strategic goals. Leaders discussed ways to improve processes, enhance teamwork, and ensure continuous improvement across all departments.

This first MR marks an important milestone for NFRDI as it strengthens its quality standards to better support the country’s fisheries sector. A well-maintained quality system helps ensure that research outputs and services meet high standards, benefiting Filipino fishermen, coastal communities, and the environment.

By focusing on a quality-driven culture, the institute hopes to lead by example in government agencies, showing how discipline and good management can improve public service.

As the NFRDI moves forward with these initiatives, it invites all employees and partners to take part in building a workplace where excellence is the norm, and where everyone’s efforts contribute to national progress.
