LAGUNA – Bright minds and buzzing ideas filled SEARCA, UPLB, as the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (DA-BAFS) shared its latest research on organic agriculture during the International Conference on Organic Agriculture (ICOA) 2025 from November 26 to 28.

For three days, 140 participants from across the region gathered to discuss best practices, standards, and innovations in organic farming. Representing DA-BAFS, Ms. Melissa Astillero from the Standards Research Division presented a study titled “Comparative Evaluation of Organic Beekeeping Practices in the Philippines Against the Codex, IFOAM, European Union, and USA Standards.”

Her research highlighted how Philippine organic beekeeping aligns with international standards, providing insights to improve local practices while ensuring competitiveness in global markets. The presentation also emphasized evidence-based standardization as a tool to strengthen organic farming nationwide.

“The conference was a valuable platform to share our findings, learn from international experts, and build networks that will benefit the Philippines’ organic agriculture sector,” said a DA-BAFS official. “These collaborations will help us refine national standards and support farmers in producing high-quality, sustainable products.”

ICOA 2025 focused on knowledge exchange, innovation, and collaboration among researchers, regulators, and farmers. Topics included organic crop production, certification systems, sustainable livestock and beekeeping, and policy development. Participants also explored ways to harmonize national standards with global benchmarks to promote trade and ensure food safety.

For DA-BAFS, events like ICOA reinforce its commitment to evidence-based policies and standards. By applying research and international best practices, the bureau aims to elevate the Philippines’ organic agriculture industry, offering farmers guidance, market access, and improved sustainability.

As organic farming gains traction worldwide, DA-BAFS continues to prioritize research, collaboration, and practical standards that benefit farmers, consumers, and the environment alike.
