Under the warm sun of Panglao, Bohol, government employees from across the country gathered in front of laptops—not to file reports, but to explore how numbers and charts can help Filipino farmers.
From August 11 to 15, 2025, a staff member from the Bureau of Plant Industry – Crop Pest Management Division (BPI–CPMD) joined a five-day training on Data Analytics and Visualization using Power BI. The workshop was organized by the Department of Agriculture – Information and Communications Technology Service (DA-ICTS).
The goal: to equip DA staff with digital skills that can turn raw data into clear, visual insights—helping the agency make better, faster decisions for the agriculture sector.
Turning Data into Action
Power BI is a modern data analytics tool developed by Microsoft. It allows users to organize, analyze, and visualize information in ways that are easy to understand—even for people who aren’t tech-savvy.
During the training, participants learned how to build interactive dashboards and reports that can track farm production, pest outbreaks, weather patterns, and market trends.
These tools are crucial for agencies like BPI–CPMD, which monitors plant pests and diseases nationwide. Timely data can help prevent major crop losses and improve farmers’ access to real-time information.
“Kapag malinaw ang datos, mas mabilis tayong makakagawa ng tamang desisyon. Mas maraming magsasaka ang natutulungan,” said one participant.
Pushing for Digital Agriculture
This training supports the Department of Agriculture’s broader campaign to modernize farming through digital transformation.
Under the “Bagong Pilipinas” framework, the DA is pushing for the use of technology—from satellite mapping to online farm registries—to make agriculture more competitive and efficient.
Data analytics plays a key role in this plan. By collecting and visualizing information properly, the government can respond faster to problems like pest infestations, droughts, or price drops.
The Power BI training is one of many efforts to upskill DA employees so they can serve farmers better through smarter planning and faster responses.
Benefits for Farmers and Policymakers
When properly used, tools like Power BI can shorten the time it takes for information from the ground to reach decision-makers in the national offices.
For example, a pest outbreak in a corn field in Mindanao can be tracked quickly and analyzed for patterns—helping officials act before the situation worsens.
At the same time, farmers can benefit when the government uses data to identify areas that need support, new programs, or technical training.
Looking Ahead
As the training concluded, participants returned to their offices with a better understanding of how to use data not just for reports, but for real solutions in the field.
The DA hopes that more staff and partner agencies will embrace digital tools in daily operations, so that policies and programs reach Filipino farmers more effectively and with greater impact.
