Inside the busy halls of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the Bureau of Customs (BOC-NAIA) took a moment to recognize a partner that has stood firm in defending the country’s wildlife. The BOC-NAIA awarded the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – National Capital Region (DENR-NCR) for its active cooperation in stopping illegal wildlife trade and enforcing environmental laws.
The recognition ceremony was led by BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno and District Collector Alexandra Yap Lumontad. They expressed deep appreciation to DENR-NCR for its vital support in customs operations involving wildlife monitoring, enforcement, and joint law implementation.
Receiving the award were OIC Maricar Puno-Sanchez of the DENR-NCR Enforcement Division and Unit Head Forester Jerrymie A. Dinampo of the Wildlife Traffic Monitoring Unit.
Nepomuceno highlighted that protecting wildlife is not just a job for one agency but a shared responsibility among government offices and the public. He said the strong partnership between the BOC and DENR ensures stricter action against smugglers and illegal traders of endangered animals.
Under Republic Act 9147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, the importation, exportation, or sale of wildlife without proper permits is strictly prohibited. Violators may face imprisonment and hefty fines.
The collaboration between BOC and DENR has led to several successful interceptions of illegal wildlife shipments at NAIA in recent years, including smuggled exotic birds, reptiles, and other protected species. These operations not only protect the country’s biodiversity but also prevent the spread of diseases linked to wildlife trafficking.
According to the DENR, Metro Manila remains a key entry point for trafficked wildlife, making inter-agency coordination critical. The agency continues to strengthen its enforcement units and raise public awareness about the importance of protecting native species and ecosystems.
Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to work hand in hand in building a more sustainable and wildlife-safe Philippines.
