In the quiet towns of Romblon, long queues form early in the morning as families, farmers, drivers, and fishermen patiently wait for their turn to buy rice under the Department of Agriculture–Food Terminal Incorporated’s (DA-FTI) Benteng Bigas Program. For many low-income households, this affordable rice initiative has become a vital support amid rising food prices.

The Benteng Bigas Program continues to make a strong impact across Romblon province, providing high-quality yet low-cost rice to qualified beneficiaries, including members of vulnerable communities. Through the program, the DA-FTI ensures that staple food remains within reach of ordinary Filipinos who struggle with daily expenses.

Local residents have expressed appreciation for the program’s affordability and consistency. “Malaking tulong po talaga ito sa amin, lalo na sa mga panahong mataas ang presyo ng bilihin,” said one tricycle driver in Odiongan, noting that the program allows him to save more for other family needs.

The initiative supports the government’s wider goal under the Bagong Pilipinas program to strengthen food security and promote fairness in food distribution. By working with the National Food Authority (NFA) and local government units, the DA-FTI helps stabilize rice supply and prices, especially in island and rural provinces where transport costs can make rice more expensive.

Aside from providing cheap rice, the Benteng Bigas Program also benefits local farmers. The rice distributed through the program is sourced directly from local producers, ensuring that they receive fair compensation for their harvest. This circular approach allows the program to uplift both consumers and the agricultural sector.

According to the DA-FTI, the continuing success of Benteng Bigas in Romblon and other parts of the country reflects the government’s commitment to a “Bagong Pilipinas” that is inclusive and resilient. Efforts are ongoing to expand the program to more provinces, ensuring that no Filipino is left behind in accessing affordable food.

As food security remains a national concern, programs like Benteng Bigas demonstrate how cooperation among government agencies, farmers, and communities can make a tangible difference in the lives of ordinary people.
