On a small plot of land in Bicol, a young man gently scatters feed for his chickens as the morning sun rises. What started with just 18 hens and two roosters has now become a growing poultry business that feeds his family and inspires his community.
Cristian Saballegue, a graduate of the Binhi ng Pag-Asa Program (BPP) and cum laude in Bachelor of Agricultural Technology from Central Bicol State University of Agriculture, is now the proud owner of Sab’s Eggstraordinary FRC—a poultry enterprise he built from scratch.
From Starter Kit to Sustainable Livelihood
Cristian began his agri-journey through the support of the BPP, a program under the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) aimed at empowering young farmers.
“I learned from the program that even the smallest beginnings can grow into something meaningful for my family and community,” he said.
With determination and proper training, he transformed a basic starter kit into a working enterprise. But like many farmers, his path was not without challenges.
Overcoming Disease with Innovation
When his flock was hit by infectious coryza, a common but serious poultry disease, Cristian didn’t give up. Instead, he diversified his breeds and searched for better ways to keep his chickens healthy.
He also found a smart way to cut costs and reduce feed expenses. By mixing commercial feeds with madre de agua, mulberry leaves, and leftover food, he was able to make a single sack of feed last up to a month—double its usual use.
This small but impactful innovation helped him sustain his business during difficult times.
Sharing Knowledge and Inspiring Others
Cristian now sells eggs and hatchlings to nearby households and young farmers in his area. But his influence doesn’t stop there. He has also led training sessions for youth in his municipality, proving that agriculture can be a promising path for the next generation.
His message to aspiring agri-preneurs is simple but powerful:
“Start small, work hard, and involve your family. The income is important, but the bond and lessons you gain from farming are priceless.”
A Model for the Future of Agriculture
Programs like the Binhi ng Pag-Asa continue to play a vital role in empowering young Filipinos in rural areas to take the lead in agriculture. Through education, mentorship, and seed capital, these programs are planting the seeds of long-term change.
Cristian’s story is proof that with the right support and mindset, even a few chickens can become a gateway to sustainable livelihood, stronger communities, and renewed pride in farming.
