Families in Eastern Samar woke up to dark skies and restless winds on Thursday morning as Tropical Depression Wilma inched closer to the region, bringing the threat of heavy rain and flooding to communities still recovering from past storms.
Tropical Depression Wilma was spotted 245 kilometers east of Borongan City at 4 a.m., according to the latest advisory from state weather bureau PAGASA. The system slightly accelerated as it moved west-southwest over the Philippine Sea, carrying maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching up to 55 kph. It continued to move at a steady 20 kph toward the Visayas.
PAGASA warned that Wilma may bring moderate to heavy, and at times intense, rainfall over parts of Eastern Visayas and nearby areas. These conditions could trigger flash floods or landslides, especially in low-lying communities and mountain slopes. Local disaster officials advised residents to monitor updates and prepare for possible evacuations.
In Luzon, the Northeast Monsoon, or amihan, continued to affect the region, pulling in cooler winds but also enhancing cloud formation that may bring light to moderate rains in parts of Northern and Central Luzon. Although these rains are not linked to Wilma, the combined weather systems may increase the risk of slippery roads and reduced visibility, particularly in the Cordillera and Cagayan Valley regions.
The Department of Agriculture’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management team also reminded farmers and fisherfolk to take precautions. Strong winds may pose minor threats to small fishing boats, while heavy rains could damage newly planted crops in Eastern Visayas and Bicol. Farmers were advised to secure seedlings, check drainage around farmlands, and postpone any sea travel until conditions improve.
As Wilma moves closer to land, authorities urged the public to stay vigilant and follow advisories from local governments. Weather conditions can change quickly, and early preparation is key to avoiding harm.
