The hum of the city faded as marine mammal responders, researchers, and local government officials gathered in Quezon City from December 9 to 11, 2025. Over three days, the Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding Network (PMMSN) celebrated two decades of protecting the country’s marine mammals.
The event, led by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in partnership with PMMSN, brought together experts and conservation partners from across the Philippines. Participants attended plenary lectures, poster presentations, and workshops aimed at strengthening skills in marine mammal rescue, research, and conservation.
The symposium also recognized the dedication of outstanding regions, responders, personnel, and partner institutions who have significantly contributed to PMMSN’s successes over the past 20 years. These awards highlight the critical role of local communities and agencies in safeguarding dolphins, whales, and other marine mammals.
Through discussions and capacity-building sessions, the PMMSN emphasized its ongoing mission: to enhance the protection of marine mammals while fostering collaboration among stakeholders. Experts shared updates on best practices in rescue operations, data collection, and conservation strategies to respond effectively to strandings.
“This gathering is not just a celebration but a renewal of our commitment to marine mammal conservation,” said one PMMSN official. “By sharing knowledge and recognizing our partners, we ensure that our work continues to protect marine life for the next generation.”
The 12th National Symposium reflects the growing awareness and action in the Philippines toward marine conservation. It underscores the importance of partnerships between government agencies, academic institutions, and local communities in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable marine ecosystems.
As PMMSN looks forward to the next 20 years, the symposium serves as a reminder that protecting marine mammals requires continuous learning, coordination, and dedication from all sectors.
