In the bustling trading hubs of Davao City and the surrounding towns, abaca fibers are being closely examined to ensure only the finest strands reach local and international markets. The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) recently led thorough inspections to uphold the country’s reputation as the world’s top abaca supplier.
Under Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza and OIC-Regional Director Engr. Irma R. Rodis, PhilFIDA’s Task Force on Fiber Quality visited licensed Grading and Baling Establishments (GBEs) across Davao City and Davao del Sur. The team, including Norberto P. Solano, Andy M. Baco, Joel T. Alcoser, and Mary Glaine R. Valdez, conducted monitoring, surveillance, and on-site inspections to check fiber grading, classification, and compliance with national standards.
These activities follow the Philippine National Standards (PNS) for Abaca Fiber and Administrative Circular No. 12, s. 2002. By enforcing these rules, PhilFIDA ensures the fibers meet consistent quality standards, protecting the credibility of local traders and exporters. Regular inspections also foster fair competition within the industry, benefiting small and medium-scale farmers who rely on abaca for their livelihoods.
PhilFIDA’s efforts aim to strengthen quality assurance mechanisms that build confidence among international buyers. The Philippines exports more than 90% of its abaca fiber, and maintaining its premium quality is essential for keeping global demand high. With strict monitoring and adherence to standards, local producers can command better prices and maintain the country’s position as the leading source of natural abaca fiber.
Beyond trade and compliance, PhilFIDA emphasizes sustainable industry practices. By supporting proper grading and responsible processing, the agency helps safeguard the environment, promotes long-term economic stability for rural communities, and preserves the Philippines’ reputation for world-class natural fibers.
As the inspections continue, PhilFIDA remains committed to protecting the interests of local stakeholders while ensuring that Philippine abaca retains its global recognition for quality. For farmers, traders, and exporters alike, these measures provide assurance that their efforts in cultivation and production translate into competitive and trusted products on the world stage.
