Many Filipinos rely on Facebook for daily updates, especially from government agencies. But for some followers, confusion set in after one official page suddenly disappeared without warning.
The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) has issued a public advisory after the Facebook page of its Brackishwater Fisheries Research and Development Center (BFRDC) was compromised.
According to the agency, the incident has already been reported through Meta’s official account recovery and security system. As a result, the affected page is now inaccessible and can no longer be searched online. Authorities are currently working to recover control of the account.
NFRDI warned the public to be cautious and avoid engaging with any suspicious messages, posts, or pages that may pretend to represent the BFRDC. Cybersecurity incidents like this can lead to the spread of false information, scams, or unauthorized content if not addressed quickly.
The agency advised the public to rely only on its official main Facebook page for verified announcements, updates, and communication. This step is important to prevent confusion and ensure that people receive accurate and trusted information, especially those involved in fisheries and coastal communities.
Government agencies in the Philippines have increasingly used social media platforms to reach a wider audience. For sectors like fisheries, timely updates are important for sharing research, weather advisories, and livelihood support programs. A compromised page can disrupt communication and affect communities that depend on these updates.
Cybersecurity experts continue to remind users to stay alert online. Common signs of compromised pages include unusual posts, sudden changes in content, or requests for personal information. The public is encouraged to report suspicious activity immediately and avoid clicking unknown links.
NFRDI assured stakeholders that efforts are ongoing to restore the page and strengthen its digital security measures. The agency also thanked the public for their cooperation and vigilance during this time.
As more services move online, protecting official communication channels becomes more important. This incident serves as a reminder for both institutions and users to practice caution and verify information before trusting or sharing it.
