Leaders of farmers’ groups gathered around a long conference table in Quezon City, hopeful that their concerns would be heard by the very agency responsible for strengthening the country’s rice supply. For many of them, the meeting was more than a formality—it was a chance to help shape policies that affect the lives of millions of farming families.

The National Food Authority (NFA) held the fourth quarter meeting of the Philippines Farmers’ Advisory Board (PFAB), a consultative body that works closely with the agency in developing programs and guidelines for the agriculture sector. NFA Administrator Larry Lacson emphasized that the PFAB remains a crucial partner in crafting farmer-centered policies, especially at a time when food security challenges continue to grow.

During the meeting, representatives from farmer associations and cooperatives discussed issues on palay farmgate prices, access to post-harvest facilities, and the need to protect local producers from sudden market shifts. Members also raised concerns on transportation costs, drying support, and storage systems—factors that often reduce the income of small farmers across the country.

The advisory board provides the NFA with direct insights from the ground, ensuring that new rules and programs align with the realities faced by farmers. Lacson said the agency values PFAB’s recommendations, noting that policies work best when shaped with the participation of those who rely on agriculture for their livelihood.

The NFA reiterated its commitment to fair and transparent service under its guiding principle: “Sa Serbisyong Pataas at Tapat, Bigas ay Laging Dekalidad.” Officials highlighted that improving rice quality, supporting smallholders, and maintaining stable supply remain core priorities under ongoing reforms.

PFAB members also expressed support for the government’s broader goal of strengthening food security under the Bagong Pilipinas framework. They said farmer voices must remain central to decision-making, especially as climate change, rising production costs, and market competition continue to challenge rural communities.

As the meeting concluded, both the NFA and PFAB pledged to continue working hand in hand to uplift the agricultural sector. For the farmers who attended, the discussion was a reminder that meaningful progress begins when government and grassroots groups move together toward a shared goal—ensuring Filipino families have access to affordable and high-quality rice.
