Just hours after a powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake shook parts of Mindanao, the National Food Authority (NFA) in Davao Oriental quickly took action to ensure that rice supply and food security in the area remained stable.

On October 6, the NFA team immediately inspected their facilities to check for damage and verify if rice stocks were safe and sufficient for emergency needs. Despite the strength of the quake, all employees were safe, and the agency confirmed that all warehouses remained secure and operational.

Quick response to protect food supply

The NFA emphasized its commitment to protecting the food security of affected communities, especially during disasters. Following safety protocols, the agency mobilized teams to assess warehouse conditions and review available rice inventory.

“We are thankful that our personnel are safe and that our warehouses withstood the quake. We’re ready to respond if any municipality needs rice support,” an NFA official said.

Sapat ang suplay ng bigas

According to the local NFA office, rice supply in Davao Oriental is more than enough to support the needs of residents, including possible relief operations. This assurance brings peace of mind to families, especially those living in areas prone to landslides, flooding, or aftershocks.

The agency reaffirmed its duty to serve the public fairly and promptly, in line with its core message: “Sa Serbisyong Patas at Tapat, Bigas ay Laging Dekalidad.”

Strengthening disaster readiness in agriculture

As climate change continues to cause stronger typhoons and earthquakes in the country, agencies like the NFA are stepping up efforts to improve their disaster response systems. This includes strengthening storage facilities, prepositioning rice stocks in strategic locations, and closely coordinating with local government units.

The 7.6 magnitude earthquake that hit the southern Philippines serves as another reminder of the importance of preparedness, especially when it comes to basic food needs during emergencies.

The NFA’s swift action in Davao Oriental shows that with proper planning, food security can be protected even in times of crisis.
