In a quiet village where carabaos are still a vital part of daily farm life, six newly trained artificial insemination (AI) technicians are preparing to bring big changes to the countryside. Their mission: to help improve the quality of carabaos, increase farmers’ income, and build stronger agricultural communities in Panay and Guimaras.
These technicians, backed by the Department of Agriculture–Philippine Carabao Center at West Visayas State University (DA-PCC at WVSU), recently completed a month-long training on artificial insemination and pregnancy diagnosis for large ruminants. The course ran from September 1 to 30, 2025, and was held at the DA-PCC office, institutional farm, and selected barangays within their AI coverage areas.
Local Heroes in the Making
The six participants were endorsed by their local government units and partner schools, including:
-
LGU-Nueva Valencia, Guimaras
-
LGU-Tigbauan
-
LGU-Ajuy
-
LGU-Pototan
-
Capiz State University–Pontevedra Campus
Their goal is to return to their towns and apply their skills directly in the field, helping fellow farmers improve livestock quality through science-based breeding.
One key feature of the training was the “Adopt-a-Trainee” program, where each new technician was paired with an experienced AI practitioner. This mentorship gave them not only practical knowledge, but also real-world confidence in performing AI procedures on carabaos.
Serving the Countryside with Heart and Skill
Jason P. Magno, a trainee from LGU-Pototan, believes being an AI technician means much more than applying technical skills.
“Ang responsibilidad sang isa ka AI tech amo ang pagtan-aw sang sitwasyon sang mga kasapatan, pag kampanya sang AI, kag ipabalo ang mga benepisyo sini,” he said.

Magno said it’s a rare opportunity to be part of something that directly helps small farmers improve their animals and livelihoods.
Meanwhile, Ronnierex A. Dollete of Capiz State University–Pontevedra emphasized how AI technicians contribute to both social development and rural economy.
“Responsibilidad sang isa ka AI technician ang makabulig sa mga mangunguma sa pag-upgrade sang ila mga kasapatan, makadugang sang kita, kag makatudlo sang insakto nga pamaagi sa pagsagod,” he shared.

Long-Term Investment in Carabao Industry
Since 2020, DA-PCC at WVSU has trained a total of 40 AI technicians. This latest batch marks the 11th group produced by the center’s in-house AI training program. These efforts form part of the national push to enhance local dairy and meat production while reducing the reliance on imported livestock.
Artificial insemination is a low-cost, science-backed method of improving livestock genetics. It allows farmers to breed stronger, healthier, and more productive carabaos—especially useful in areas where access to high-quality breeding bulls is limited.
The DA-PCC’s support continues beyond the training, as the technicians will receive assistance through monitoring, field visits, and additional workshops.
With rising food demand and the need for better livestock, these newly trained technicians are stepping into an essential role. Armed with knowledge, dedication, and the trust of their communities, they represent hope for more productive farms and a better life for many rural families.
