In many Filipino households, students now juggle online classes, research work, and digital tasks using only a phone or shared computer. This growing need for accessible tools set the stage for a new webinar that introduced learners to modern libraries and the technology that supports today’s style of education.
The session, led by Gerald C. Diño, Digital Scholarship Librarian of De La Salle University–Manila, aims to help students, teachers, and professionals understand how digital libraries, online tools, and makerspaces can make learning faster, easier, and more interactive. The webinar is accessible to the public through Zoom, giving participants from all over the country the chance to join without leaving their homes.
Modern libraries now offer far more than printed books. According to Mr. Diño, digital scholarship services make it possible to access research materials, journals, and multimedia resources anytime and anywhere. Tools such as online catalogues, e-books, and virtual research platforms allow students to work more efficiently, whether they are studying for exams or preparing a project.
The webinar also highlights the growing importance of makerspaces—dedicated areas in libraries where users can create, design, and experiment using modern equipment. These may include 3D printers, audio-visual tools, creative software, and other hands-on resources that support innovation. For many learners, makerspaces open doors to skills not commonly taught inside the classroom, such as digital design, content creation, and prototype development.
Participants are expected to learn practical techniques on navigating online databases, organizing digital information, and using productivity tools that can support both academic and personal projects. With many public and private schools shifting to blended learning, these digital resources are becoming essential in bridging gaps in access and helping students remain competitive.
Library advocates say that strengthening digital learning tools is crucial in improving education across the country, especially for students in underserved areas. While not all Filipinos have equal access to devices or fast internet, webinars like this encourage wider awareness of free or low-cost tools that can help young learners and adult professionals alike.
As technology continues to transform classrooms and workplaces, the message is clear: modern libraries are no longer just places to borrow books—they are hubs for creativity, collaboration, and lifelong learning.
