Shoppers moving through crowded wet markets in Metro Manila paused to take a closer look this week as government monitors reviewed the latest prices of common fish sold on local stalls. Many buyers said even small changes in price could affect their daily meals, especially for families relying on affordable seafood.

The Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), through its Fisheries Industry Development and Support Services Division, conducted its regular price monitoring of key fishery products on November 11 and 14 in select markets across the capital.

Teams visited several public markets to record the prevailing prices of bangus, tilapia, local and imported galunggong, and alumahan. These fish varieties are among the most commonly purchased by Filipino households, making their price movements a strong indicator of market conditions.

BFAR said the monitoring aims to keep track of supply levels, ensure fair market pricing, and help consumers make informed choices. The agency also coordinates with market administrators and vendors to understand factors affecting daily price adjustments, such as transport costs, weather conditions, and supply from major fishing grounds.

Fish prices in Metro Manila often shift depending on catch volume and shipping delays. During the last quarter of the year, demand usually increases as families prepare for holidays, sometimes pushing prices slightly higher. BFAR’s monitoring helps government planners and consumers anticipate these changes.

The agency reminded the public that price movements can vary per market, depending on location and supply flow. BFAR is expected to release detailed data to guide households, traders, and local policymakers in managing their budgets and planning purchases.

As Filipino families continue to face rising food costs, clear and timely price information remains essential. BFAR encourages shoppers to check updated advisories and report unusual price spikes to their local authorities.
