In the middle of this busy scene, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. arrived to see firsthand how market conditions affect ordinary Filipinos.
On Wednesday, President Marcos led a joint inspection with the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to monitor the prices and supply of basic goods. The visit aimed to ensure that food remains affordable and that there is enough supply for the public.
During the inspection, the President and key officials checked several important areas inside the market. They examined the “timbangan ng bayan” or public weighing scale to ensure vendors follow fair measurement practices. They also reviewed the Bantay Presyo Bulletin Board, where updated prices of goods are posted to guide consumers.
The group visited different sections of the market, including fish, meat, fruits, vegetables, and poultry. These are among the most essential food items for Filipino households. Officials assessed whether prices were within suggested levels and if supplies were stable despite ongoing challenges such as rising production costs and changing weather conditions.
Joining the President were Agriculture Secretary Francisco “Kiko” Tiu Laurel Jr., Trade and Industry Secretary Ma. Cristina A. Roque, and San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora. Their presence highlighted the government’s coordinated effort to manage food security and protect consumers from unfair pricing.
The Department of Agriculture has been strengthening its monitoring systems across public markets nationwide. Programs like Bantay Presyo aim to give consumers clear and updated information, helping them make better purchasing decisions. At the same time, authorities continue to work closely with vendors and suppliers to prevent sudden price spikes and ensure steady delivery of goods.
Market inspections like this also serve as a way for the government to listen directly to vendors and buyers. Many sellers shared concerns about higher transport and production costs, which can affect retail prices. Meanwhile, consumers expressed the need for affordable food as families continue to manage tight budgets.
Ensuring fair prices and sufficient food supply remains a top priority, especially as the country works toward long-term food security. Regular monitoring, strong coordination among agencies, and support for local producers are key steps in achieving this goal.
As the visit ended, the message was clear: protecting both consumers and farmers is essential in building a stable and sustainable food system. Continued vigilance and cooperation between the government and the public will help ensure that basic goods remain accessible to every Filipino family.
