In many farms across the Philippines, growers look at their plants and wonder why fruits stay small or flowers fail to bloom well. Often, the answer is not pests or lack of water, but missing nutrients in the soil—especially potassium.

The Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA) is reminding farmers and growers about the importance of potassium, also known as K, as one of the main nutrients needed for healthy plant growth. This reminder comes as many farmers prepare their fields and gardens for the next planting season and aim to improve yield and crop quality.

Potassium is one of the three primary nutrients plants need, along with nitrogen and phosphorus. While nitrogen helps plants grow leaves and stems, and phosphorus supports roots and early development, potassium plays a major role in overall plant strength and productivity.

According to the FPA, potassium helps plants produce sugar and starch. These are essential for forming bigger and heavier fruits, grains, and root crops. Crops with enough potassium often produce higher yields, which means better harvests and more income for farmers.

Potassium also improves the color and appearance of flowers and fruits. For fruit growers, this is important because bright color and good size make produce more attractive to buyers in markets. For ornamental plants, healthy color adds value and beauty.

Another key role of potassium is strengthening plant stems, branches, and trunks. Plants with enough potassium are less likely to lodge, or fall over, during strong winds and heavy rains. This is especially important in the Philippines, where typhoons and unpredictable weather are common.

The nutrient also helps plants manage water better. Potassium supports proper opening and closing of leaf pores, which helps plants handle drought or excess moisture. Crops that are balanced with potassium tend to be more resistant to stress and diseases.

Farmers may notice signs of potassium deficiency if leaves turn yellow or brown at the edges, fruits remain small, or plants grow weak and thin. In severe cases, yields can drop, even if other fertilizers are applied.

The FPA advises farmers to follow recommended fertilizer programs and avoid applying nutrients blindly. Soil testing, when available, can help determine if potassium is lacking. Using the right amount of fertilizer not only improves crop health but also saves money and protects the environment.

Different crops require different levels of potassium. Rice, corn, bananas, sugarcane, vegetables, and fruit trees all benefit from proper potassium application, but timing and dosage matter. Applying too little can reduce yield, while too much can waste resources and affect soil balance.

The FPA continues to encourage farmers to seek advice from agricultural technicians, local government units, and accredited dealers when choosing fertilizers. Using registered and properly labeled products also ensures safety and effectiveness.

As farming costs continue to rise, making the most of every input is important. Understanding nutrients like potassium can help farmers make smarter decisions and improve harvest results.

With proper knowledge and responsible use of fertilizers, farmers can grow healthier crops, earn better returns, and help strengthen food production across the country.
