Beneath the calm waves and along the country’s thriving coastlines, Filipino scientists and fisherfolk are working together to build a more sustainable future for the fishing industry. The FiSearch July–September 2025 issue of the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) brings readers the latest research, breakthroughs, and success stories from the world of Philippine fisheries.
FiSearch, the official quarterly publication of NFRDI, highlights how science and technology continue to play a vital role in protecting marine resources, improving aquaculture, and supporting the livelihoods of local fisherfolk. The new issue features updates on various research-for-development initiatives, sustainable fishing technologies, and innovations designed to boost fish production while caring for the environment.
Among the key topics covered in this issue are the latest studies on climate-resilient aquaculture systems, sustainable fishery practices, and post-harvest innovations that help reduce waste and increase product quality. It also includes inspiring stories from communities that have adopted science-based methods to improve their catch and income.
NFRDI Executive Director Dr. Lilian Garcia emphasized the importance of continuous research in the country’s efforts to ensure food security and environmental balance. “Through science, we are not only protecting our seas and lakes but also ensuring that future generations will have enough to eat and livelihoods to depend on,” she said.
FiSearch also features collaborations between NFRDI, the Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), state universities, and local government units. These partnerships aim to develop practical solutions for small-scale fisherfolk, such as low-cost aquaculture systems, improved fish feeds, and training on sustainable fishing techniques.
