The hum of weaving looms and the soft rustle of raw cotton filled the halls of SM Megamall’s Megatrade Hall B in Mandaluyong City on October 29, 2025, as Senator Loren Legarda met with key officials from the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) and the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI).
Legarda, known for championing Filipino culture and sustainable livelihoods, sat down with PhilFIDA executives, including Ms. Evelyn B. Cagasan, Chief of the Regulatory Division, and Ms. Concepcion D. Jocson, Officer-in-Charge of the Fiber Utilization and Technology Division, along with Dr. Julius L. Leaño Jr., DOST-PTRI Director. The discussion focused on the current state of the country’s cotton industry and ongoing efforts to revitalize local fiber production.
The meeting highlighted collaborative initiatives under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration aimed at strengthening rural livelihoods, ensuring sustainable industry growth, and supporting Filipino weavers. PhilFIDA Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza emphasized the need to boost local fiber output while preserving traditional weaving techniques.
Senator Legarda reaffirmed her commitment to supporting local fiber producers and weavers, emphasizing that the revival of cotton and abaca industries is essential for both economic and cultural sustainability. “Investing in our local fiber sector empowers rural communities, preserves our heritage, and strengthens the Philippines’ position in the global textile market,” Legarda said.
The National Arts and Crafts Fair provided the perfect backdrop for these discussions, showcasing the country’s vibrant textile products and the skill of Filipino artisans. Advocates say that strengthening the fiber sector not only creates jobs but also promotes eco-friendly materials, aligning with global sustainability trends.
As the Philippines continues to pursue a more self-reliant and resilient textile industry, government agencies and lawmakers like Legarda play a vital role in turning these initiatives into real opportunities for farmers and weavers across the country.
The event served as a reminder that supporting local industries is more than economic—it is about preserving Filipino identity and craftsmanship for future generations.
