As dark clouds gathered over parts of the Visayas and Bicol Region on Wednesday, many rice farmers prepared for another round of heavy rain that could damage thousands of hectares of crops already nearing harvest.

Weather reports showed that around 10,199 hectares of palay may be affected as the Shear Line and approaching Tropical Depression Wilma bring widespread rains to key rice-producing provinces. Wilma was last spotted over the waters near Catarman, Northern Samar, and continues to move west-northwest toward the eastern side of the country.

According to the latest forecast, Wilma is expected to make landfall over Eastern Visayas or the Dinagat Islands by Thursday, December 5. The system is likely to bring intense rainfall that could flood low-lying farms, soften soil, and submerge young palay plants.

PAGASA warned that several provinces may experience severe weather conditions as Wilma approaches. Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Catanduanes, Albay, and Sorsogon are expected to receive heavy to intense rains. These areas have a high concentration of agricultural land, making them more vulnerable to crop losses whenever storms hit during the planting or early growth stages.

Other provinces may also experience strong to intense rainfall, including Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Agusan del Norte, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, and Masbate. Heavy rains in these provinces could disrupt planting schedules, cause flash floods, and damage irrigation systems essential for the coming cropping season.

Agriculture officials urged farmers to take early precautions, such as securing seedlings, clearing farm drainage, and protecting farm equipment from floodwater. Those in high-risk areas were also advised to monitor local government updates and avoid working outdoors during intense rain or gusty winds.

Officials added that while storms are a normal part of the season, early preparation can significantly reduce losses and help farmers recover faster once the weather improves. As Wilma nears landfall, communities across Eastern Visayas and nearby regions are encouraged to stay alert and prioritize safety.
