Warm music and early morning energy filled the National Ecology Center in Quezon City as government workers gathered for a special Flag Raising Ceremony on December 1. The event marked the start of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Their Children, an annual call for unity and action against abuse.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources–National Capital Region led the kickoff activity, headed by Regional Executive Director Atty. Michael Drake P. Matias. He emphasized the agency’s commitment to support the national campaign, noting that public servants have a duty to promote safety, equality, and respect both inside and outside their workplaces.
One of the first activities was a community Zumba session, which drew dozens of employees eager to take part. Organizers said the exercise aimed not only to promote health but also to build awareness and solidarity. By moving together in a positive and lively environment, participants showed their support for the message of ending violence in all forms.
Employees wore bright orange shirts, the official color of the global movement. Orange symbolizes hope and a future free from violence. This visual statement, seen across the grounds of the National Ecology Center, served as a reminder that protecting women and children requires collective involvement and consistent advocacy.
The 18-Day Campaign, observed nationwide every year from November 25 to December 12, highlights the need to address gender-based violence, which affects thousands of Filipino women and minors. According to government agencies, many cases remain unreported due to fear, stigma, or lack of access to support services. Campaigns like this help raise awareness, encourage reporting, and push institutions to strengthen response systems.
DENR-NCR officials said their participation reflects the agency’s broader commitment to nurturing safe and humane communities. They added that every employee has a role in building a respectful work environment where women and children feel protected and valued.
The kickoff event concluded with a renewed call for continuous vigilance and compassion. Organizers encouraged the public to learn about available help lines, support survivors, and promote conversations that challenge discrimination and abuse.
As the campaign continues, the DENR-NCR hopes that the message of unity and hope will reach more homes, workplaces, and communities across Metro Manila.
