In a lively classroom at Balara High School, Grade 10 students gathered eagerly to learn about protecting the environment and local wildlife. The activity, held on October 8, 2025, was part of the ongoing campaign by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Metropolitan Environmental Office – East to raise awareness about important environmental laws.
Representatives from DENR MEO-East led the session, engaging the students—many of whom belong to the Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O)—in discussions and presentations. They explained key laws like Republic Act No. 9003, the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, which encourages proper waste management to reduce pollution and protect communities.
The briefing also included an update on the current state of Manila Bay, highlighting the condition of its shoreline and connected waterways. Officials shared ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and care for this vital waterbody, emphasizing the role young people can play in its preservation.
Further, the DENR Enforcement Unit introduced other important laws such as Republic Act No. 9147, the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, and Presidential Decree No. 705, the Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines. These laws protect wildlife and forests, which are essential parts of the country’s natural heritage.
A highlight of the activity was a live demonstration on the safe handling of snakes, a common species often found in urban areas of Metro Manila. This hands-on session aimed to teach students respect and proper care for wildlife, even those that may seem unusual or frightening.
Through activities like this, DENR-NCR hopes to deepen the understanding of young Filipinos about the importance of proper waste disposal, environmental protection, and wildlife conservation. Educating the youth is a crucial step toward building sustainable cities and securing a healthier future for all.
