Inside the clean, bright walls of a laboratory, Filipino technicians in white coats leaned over delicate instruments, carefully adjusting settings and taking notes. It wasn’t just another day at work — it was a day of learning, upgrading, and aiming for excellence.

Laboratory staff from the Department of Agriculture-PhilRice recently completed a hands-on training program designed to sharpen their skills in operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining laboratory equipment. The training is part of a continuing effort to ensure high standards and accurate results in agricultural research and testing.

Experts from trusted laboratory equipment suppliers led the sessions, offering real-world demonstrations and technical guidance. Participants didn’t just sit in lectures — they were trained to confidently handle advanced instruments and diagnose common issues, skills that are critical for lab efficiency and reliability.

Another key part of the training was a deep dive into ISO/IEC 17025, an international standard that ensures laboratories are competent and reliable in testing and calibration. To reinforce learning, participants visited accredited laboratories at the DA–Food Development Center and the DOST–Philippine Textile Research Institute, where they observed how strict procedures are followed to meet global standards.

“The goal is simple,” one organizer shared. “We want our labs to produce results that farmers, researchers, and the public can trust — every single time.”

ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is considered the gold standard in laboratory testing. With this training, the DA aims to strengthen the country’s capability to support agricultural innovation and food safety using science-based evidence.

Among the trainees were laboratory managers and key personnel from the Central Experiment Station and PhilRice branch stations nationwide. These are the frontline professionals responsible for seed testing, soil analysis, plant disease diagnostics, and other crucial support for farmers.

As agriculture in the Philippines becomes more data-driven, the role of laboratory workers is more important than ever. By investing in their training, the government ensures that Filipino farmers benefit from accurate science and modern tools.
