At local markets across the country, more Filipinos are now reaching for fresh, chemical-free vegetables and rice grown by hardworking organic farmers. This growing awareness is exactly what the Department of Agriculture (DA) hopes to strengthen as the nation celebrates Organic Agriculture Month this November.

The DA, through its regional offices and partner bureaus, joins the nationwide campaign to promote the benefits of organic farming and to encourage consumers to choose naturally grown food. The annual celebration highlights the importance of producing safe, healthy, and sustainable food while protecting the environment and supporting local farmers.

Organic agriculture is a system of farming that avoids or strictly limits the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Instead, it relies on natural methods like composting, crop rotation, and biological pest control to keep the soil fertile and the crops healthy.

According to the DA, the practice of organic farming not only provides safe food for families but also helps reduce pollution, improve soil health, and increase biodiversity. It also offers farmers better income opportunities by lowering production costs and meeting the rising demand for organic products in local and international markets.

Data from the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (BAFS) show that the country now has more than 300 certified organic farms and growing communities of small farmers practicing natural and ecological farming methods. These efforts contribute to the government’s goal of achieving food security and sustainability under the “Bagong Pilipinas” framework.

Throughout November, the DA and its attached agencies are holding various activities such as farmers’ fairs, organic food exhibits, and training programs aimed at educating both producers and consumers about the value of organic agriculture. The month-long celebration also recognizes the vital role of farmers who choose to protect the land and prioritize the health of every Filipino.

The DA is calling on everyone to support local organic producers by buying their products and promoting sustainable food choices at home. Small actions, such as choosing organic vegetables, rice, and livestock products, can make a big difference in ensuring a healthier population and a cleaner environment.

As the nation marks Organic Agriculture Month, the DA reminds the public that food security begins with safe, sustainable, and responsible farming. Supporting organic agriculture is not just a trend—it’s an investment in the country’s future.
