Early Wednesday morning, hundreds of farmers, agriculturists, and researchers across the country logged into their devices—ready to learn, connect, and grow. The Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) held a free online webinar on October 15, 2025, focusing on one of the most important but often overlooked tools in farming: the soil.
Titled “Decision Support System (DSS) for Soil Nutrient Management Towards Sustainable Crop Production,” the webinar was organized by BSWM’s Soil and Water Resources Research Division (SWRRD). The session aimed to educate participants on the latest digital systems that help farmers determine the right nutrients their crops need—saving on fertilizer costs while improving yields.
Held via Zoom and streamed live on the DA-BSWM Facebook page, the webinar also granted three Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credit units for licensed agriculturists. More than just a certificate, the learning session was a real investment in building a smarter, more efficient farming system in the Philippines.
BSWM experts introduced the Decision Support System (DSS), a science-based tool that collects and analyzes data from the field—such as soil quality, crop type, weather patterns, and farming practices. The tool then provides customized recommendations on how much and what kind of nutrients to apply.
According to the BSWM, many Filipino farmers often over- or under-fertilize because of lack of access to proper soil testing and advice. This not only reduces crop production but also harms the environment over time.
Using DSS, farmers and extension workers can now make better choices, backed by real-time data and research. The system supports the government’s goal of sustainable agriculture under the Masaganang Bagong Pilipinas campaign.
Throughout the session, participants also shared questions and feedback. Some expressed interest in learning how to apply the tool at the barangay level, while others asked about training schedules in their region. BSWM committed to expanding outreach efforts, especially in rural and upland areas.
The event is part of a continuing series of digital trainings being offered by DA-BSWM to help farmers adapt to new technologies. It also underscores the growing importance of online learning in reaching more people, especially those who cannot travel to training centers due to distance or lack of resources.
As the Philippine agriculture sector faces challenges like rising input prices and changing weather patterns, science-based tools like DSS offer hope—and a clear path forward. But knowledge must reach the grassroots. With strong partnerships and open access to technology, every farmer can be part of the solution.
